He made two sequels as a result: the widely acclaimed Spider-Man 2 in 2004 and the controversial Spider-Man 3 in 2007. With Tobey Maguire, Raimi was originally slated to helm Spider-Man 4, which was scheduled to hit theaters on May 6, 2011.

Conflicts with the studio, however, caused Raimi to abandon the project, and Sony revived the series with The Amazing Spider-Man in 2012, which would be revived again after The Amazing Spider-Man 2’s underwhelming reception, which led to the character’s inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Although Tobey Maguire’s portrayal of Peter Parker and Sam Raimi’s career as the franchise’s director came to an abrupt end, Maguire made a comeback in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home as his take on The Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Many people had hoped that Sony would approve a potential Spider-Man 4 when Raimi joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the director of the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
